Top 5: Top Picks For Me From Netflix

Recently, one of my favorite past times is watching Netflix. I love seeing what it’ll recommend me and if it would really be a movie or show I’ll enjoy. So I thought that I’d like to share the top 5 recommendations Netflix made for me:

5. A Series of Unfortunate Events

‘This series follows the tragic tale of three orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire — who are investigating their parents’ mysterious death. The siblings are saddled with an evil guardian named Count Olaf (portrayed by Emmy-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris), who will do whatever it takes to get his hands on the Baudelaires’ inheritance. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling devious plans and disguises.’

It’s really not a surprise that this show is being recommended to me. This book series is one I had started when I was younger and greatly enjoyed. It’s slightly dark and weird, but so much fun. It’s a matter of time before I watch the show.

4. Crimson Peak

‘After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young Edith (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself swept away to his remote gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille, Thomas’ alluring sister and protector of her family’s dark secrets. Able to communicate with the dead, Edith tries to decipher the mystery behind the ghostly visions that haunt her new home. As she comes closer to the truth, Edith may learn that true monsters are made of flesh and blood.’

I think that I keep thinking I’ve watched this movie before and then skipping out on it, but I actually am not sure I have. Whatever the case, I’ve definitely wanted to and will watch this movie very soon.

3. Moxie

‘Inspired by her mum’s rebellious past and a confident new friend, a shy teenager publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school.’

When the book Moxie came out I always had it in my mind I really wanted to read it, but I never got my hands on it, but it’s really no surprise that the movie is being recommended to me.

2. I Am Not Ok With This

‘A teenager navigates the complexities of high school, family and her sexuality while dealing with new superpowers; based on Charles Forsman’s graphic novel.’

Why wouldn’t I watch this? It sounds amazing!

1. Gunpowder Milkshake

‘To protect an 8-year-old girl, a dangerous assassin reunites with her mother and her lethal associates to take down a ruthless crime syndicate and its army of henchmen.’

I cannot say how strong the urge to watch this movie has been. It sounds so intriguing. God I hope I love it. I need to watch this soon!

Watching: The Suicide Squad

Another fun movie night with my best friend last night. This time it was my choice and of course my excitement lead me to choosing ‘The Suicide Squad’. I knew the day before that this is what I wanted to watch and I’m very proud of my choice.

Looking at this poster, everything you need to know about this movie is right there. It was so much fun to watch. To my surprise, the same night my boyfriend texted me that he was watching this with his sister. I know he hasn’t seen any of the other movies related to this which is why I was shocked. This movie is definitely a stand alone so it didn’t matter. But, I was also excited cause I had already told my best friend I was going to watch this with her that night.

One thing this movie did was further increase my crush on Harley Quinn.

Harley’s growth is something I think everyone’s been talking about that’s seen the movie. She’s owned by no one and she saves herself and becomes more free in who she is as a person and I adore this for her! Every scene she was in was gold and watching her on the screen made me so happy. She’s witty and unpredictable and so strong and wild and free and one of the most amazing heroes in this film. I love her.

I now want a rat named Sebastian. This little guy I loved from the very beginning. He’s so adorable and has such a big personality. So many of the funniest and quirkiest moments in the film included him. I would die for Sebastian.

Rat catcher and Bloodsport had some of the most wholesome moments in the whole film. I wanted to give them both a hug so many times. I just adored them.

King shark a.k.a sharky boy or just sharky to me gave me so many laughs. I loved every moment he was on screen. He also caused some of the most gruesome deaths, but the balance he had as a character made me forgive him. I loved him too.

I thought at the beginning I wouldn’t care much about this character, but I did. His mom being everywhere was hilarious. Plus his power was so awesome looking. He was so fun to watch.

All in all, I absolutely had a blast watching the suicide squad. It’s a delightful film with dumb humor that was perfect for my heart. I’m definitely going to be rewatching in the future for the pure enjoyment of it.

Watching: 13 Ghosts

Last night my best friend Marble asked me to watch a movie with her and of course I was down. I always enjoy watching a movie with her. So, this movie night she picked 13 Ghosts. A movie I’d never seen and knew nothing about. This is how it went:

The first thing of note is that this poster is exactly all that this movie is. The flashes of visions the psychic has and the all around fear that is present throughout the film. It’s a perfect representation of 13 Ghosts.

One thing about this movie is that it’s very memorable, especially because it’s visuals are so unique to it. The opening itself with the very strange way all this yellow tape moves in this car junk yard adds to the very creepy feel the movie has. Add that to the many many opening deaths that occur in very awful ways it is something to remember.

Then we have the family featuring the dad played by Tony Shalhoub who is also the actor who plays Adrian Monk. Seeing him in this movie is what initially really got me invested. I wanted to see the man who plays one of the most iconic characters ever play a whole different role.

Honestly, his role here wasn’t so dramatically different. His wife was also dead in this movie. He’s still acting scared even though in this movie there’s a more real threat then general germs like in Monk. He was still as steady and clear minded as he is in Monk.

What was cool and what I think most of the budget was spent on was the house. It’s massive and full of turning parts like a huge puzzle. Glass walls with words written on them are everywhere. If I had to guess most of the budget was spent on creating this for the movie. I gotta say they did a pretty awesome job with it.

I think the makeup done for the 13 ghosts was pretty much what you see at any six flags fright fest. Which is scary often, but it did make me analyze the film more in the way it was made rather being fully immersed in it, but again it is very much a product of that era of film so I’d say they did a pretty good job.

While there is quite a few glaring flaws of the film, I did very much enjoy watching it. I don’t really think any of them should have survived the film. The reasons for their survival were pretty chance based and so many more things could’ve gone wrong, but the ending was pretty neat.

Overall, I’d recommend this writers fever dream of an idea became real just for how unique it is. If you like early 2000’s horror films you’ll enjoy this movie.

Experiment: Is it Possible for me to Post Everyday?

I have tried this experiment without directly saying I was doing this experiment on several occasions before and pretty recently too. Ultimately exhaustion and emotional turmoil in my personal life have been what kept me away from being able to actually post on a daily basis.

I keep trying because I’m curious about two things. 1. What would my stat growth look like posting daily for a year? And 2. What kinds of things would end up happening and becoming available for me to do in life after deciding to post on a daily basis?

Blogging in general has opened so many doors for me in my life. I have gained so many opportunities and friendships and had conversations with authors directly in a way I never would have had otherwise. Blogging is an amazing experience.

I remember how wide eyed and excited I was when I first started blogging. Getting my first few followers and deciding I wanted to do this all the time and joining Netgalley and doing so many tags and completely enjoying the experience.

What I didn’t expect was eventually life itself would have me take a step back to the point that I had forgotten what it was to enjoy this part of my life. The insatiable reader who kept going at it and loving stories and wanting so badly to give birth to a story of her own.

I have missed this. So here I am. I am back. I have a new plan. I might write the posts daily and I might write extras on my days off. Whatever the case I’ll have a consistent daily upload time. 1 pm everyday. It feels like a good idea to me to be able to schedule my posts and it be consistent. I’m so used to doing it whenever I finish writing a post.

Also I’ll be taking my stats from before this starts and at the end of the year to see the change and how much I’ve grown and who knows maybe this will be a thing for years to come?

I Am Not Starfire: A Review

I Am Not Starfire by Mariko Tamaki

Illustrated by Yoshi Yoshitani

My Rating: 4 stars

Cover Rating: 7/10 it’s really pretty! The artwork is really well done and it very much shows the major theme of the comic.

Publisher: DC comics

Publish Date: July 27th, 2021

Number of Pages: 208 pages

Received: Dc Comics provided an e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:

Mandy is NOT like her mother. Starfire is gorgeous, tall, sparkly, and a hero. Mandy is NOT a sparkly superhero. Mandy has no powers, is a kid who dyes her hair black and hates everyone but her best friend Lincoln.

Suddenly, everything changes when she gets partnered with Claire for a school project. Mandy likes Claire a lot (even if she denies it, heartily and intensely). How do you become the person you’re supposed to be when the only thing you’re sure of is what you’re not? When someone from Starfire’s past arrives, Mandy must make a choice: give up before the battle has even begun, or step into the unknown and risk everything to save her mom.

Opening Sentence: “All my life I’ve been the kid of a superhero.”

Musings:

I really liked reading this. It was a fun little graphic novel. Mandy’s characterization is very clear, she never developed powers and due to media attention and all the endless questions she grows up wanting to be different to be the ‘Anti-Starfire’. As the story moves along she realizes she never truly was that and her desire wasn’t to be against her mom, but to be an individual.

What I Enjoyed:

The art! Yoshi has a really adorable and pretty art style. Just look at some of these teaser images! Says so much even without words.

The friendship. Mandy has one really great friend in her life that gets her and treats her like an individual and not the product of someone else. He supports her and teases her throughout the story and I love their relationship.

It feels like an introduction. This feels like reading the origin story to a fun new set of comics based on Mandy becoming her own unique superhero. It’ll be so fun to see where this story goes.

All in All:

This was a fun little read. I read it in about 30 minutes and I really enjoyed it. It was cute and seeing first love play out while mixing in the angst was really fun to read.

My Return to Genshin Impact

I hadn’t played Genshin Impact in months. Hearing all the excitement about Inuzuma has been amazing! Surprisingly though I have been actually focused on completing the chapter quests instead and finally unlocked a new chapter after ages of putting so much into it before I stopped playing.

I made sure to do a 10 pull when I got back:

Obviously, nothing exciting, but sometimes that’s how Genshin is. Hopefully, the next 10 pull I’ll get something great.

I finally did some of the story quests and I’m still needing to continue some to get to explore Inuzuma.

Currently, I’ve been doing the Reunion quests.

I wanted to keep up with this because it’s been fun and it’s helped me very much to start completing more of the chapter quests too. An all around win win situation.

So, so far it’s been pretty much that. I have some grinding to do to get into Inuzuma and start really enjoying what Genshin is all about, but so far it’s been doing things I’ve always done.

When I finally get to Inuzuma I’ll make another post and share my thoughts. I know it’ll be so much fun.

Watching: Story From North America

Last night before I was deciding to go to bed, my boyfriend decided to send me a lot of love through sharing a bunch of YouTube videos with me. Just as I had watched a good amount and was about to say goodnight he sent me one last short one, “Story From North America” and I decided alright just one more and I watched it. It was so beautiful and unique. The imagery is creepy and a little scary for those scared of spiders, but the message it gave was a beautiful one. I adored watching this.

Here is a link to “Story From North America”

Something I loved about this too was that my boyfriend hates spiders, but he also shared an appreciation for this story and the message that life even arachnid life is precious. Also, that this was a way that I have thought so many times before especially when I was a kid. Bugs our living creatures too and how would I like it if a hand came from the sky and squished me? Especially when I was minding my own business? It’s definitely not a happy thought, yet it’s what we do to bugs all the time.

But, I can also think of times where infestation happens and it is important to remove and kill bugs that as making a home in your house when their numbers could do harm to you. But as far as a single spider here and there they are actually good because they’ll eat the other bugs naturally. Safely putting them outside to just be is most of the time a good idea.

What I also loved about this is that its told in song form and the lyrics are pretty catchy. I’ve only watched it twice through and the lyrics are already sticking with me enough to quote a bit from the song. It’s in a style of music that reminds me of a children’s song. Repetitive to drive home the message and also to convey the overall feelings and tones of various parts of the song.

God, I highly recommend watching this. It’s only 4 minutes and it’s so damn good. So thought provoking and the imagery is incredible. I won’t get over the way she conveys the boys anger with his rapid movement it’s such a neat moment. This is truly art.

My Newish Skin Routine

For the first time ever in years and I mean years, I decided I needed to invest in myself and get started on a nice skincare routine. So, that’s exactly what I did. At first I was completely on top of it and then recently I stopped for about two weeks and I noticed that with the routine my acne was clearing up completely and without it pimples from all the sweat of work, wearing a mask, and general stress were coming back.

My sister recommended me this brand called Inkey and so far I can say it truly has helped me immensely! These are my morning and night routines!

Morning Routine:

Step 1: Double Oil Cleanser

I got this part for free when I first purchased everything. I don’t know how well it removes makeup, but as far as regular sweat, dirt, and clogs it does really well. You can see the dirt come off the the pad when I use it with this product. I’ve really liked this one.

Step 2: Salicylic Acid Cleanser

It says it’s meant to unclog pores while reducing black heads, blemishes and acne and I definitely have felt the reduction of all of that while using this product.

Step 3: Hyaluronic Acid

This is one of my favorite steps morning and night, because you need to keep some water on your face while applying this so it absorbes into the skin better and I like to wait to apply anything else to my skin till everything dries and it feels so good! It’s good for reducing fine lines and keeping your skin hydrated and it says on the website it’s great for everyone and honestly, I vouch for it!

Step 4: Succinic Acid

This is the acne spot treatment and I feel like this might be what does the most work in reducing my breakout spots. I haven’t tested it on its own though so I’m not sure, but with this routine my skin does feel smoother and healthier.

Step 5: Glyco-Peptide Moisturizer

I use this product because the morning moisturizer on Inkey was sold out and honestly I don’t mind just using this. They always say it’s good to start early to keep your skin smooth.

Step 6: Sun Screen

The last thing is to put on sunscreen! Best way to keep your skin healthy and save is to reduce the UV ray intake it has and starting to use sun screen daily has been important to me.

Night Routine:

Step 1-3: same as morning routine

Step 4: Beta Hydroxy Acid

This product exfoliates the skin. You can use it either morning or night and I chose the night time. It doesn’t feel like a normal exfoliate and you let it absorb into the skin instead of washing it off. It’s interesting, but again muy skin has been so much better since starting this routine and so this product is only helping.

Step 5: Succinc Acid (same as morning)

Step 6: Rosehip Oil

The product says it should only be used at night so that’s what I do. It says that it helps with skin texture and that it is good for all skin types. When I put it on it takes a while for the oil to absorb into my skin, but after my skin feels nice. It also smells nice too which I really like.

That’s it! It’s been ages, but this is finally the self care I’ve been missing out on. It feels so good to be doing things to help out my skin.

Top 5: Netflix Anime I want to Watch

I have gotten into a lot of anime lately! Many that I will talk about on here soon enough. However, there’s many I want to check out and I wanted to share some of the ones on Netflix that have caught my eye.

Beaststars

“Based on writer and illustrator Paru Itagaki’s award-winning manga, Beastars follows Legoshi, a shy, timid and – contrary to his appearance – sheepish gray wolf. A member of the drama club at Cherryton High School, Legoshi has spent much of his life playing the weakling, doing everything he can to avoid conflict. While quite a few animals chastise him for downplaying his more feral instincts and his friendly relations with herbivores, Legoshi displays a solemn maturity, emphasized by Chikahiro Kobayashi’s winning voice performance.”

This sounds so adorable. It’s the first time I read about what it’s about and I didn’t realize how cute it sounded and I want to check it out so bad.

Castlevania

“Inspired by the popular video game series, this anime series is a dark medieval fantasy. It follows the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, Trevor Belmont, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hands of Vlad Dracula Tepes. As Dracula and his legion of vampires prepare to rid the world of humanity’s stain, Belmont is no longer alone, and he and his misfit comrades race to find a way to save mankind from the grief-maddened Dracula.”

I’ve never heard a bad thing about this anime. It sounds epic. I have a feeling I’ll be obsessed once I start watching.

Trese

“In Manila, where dark supernatural forces pervade the criminal underworld, it’s up to Alexandra Trese to keep the peace — but there’s a storm brewing.”

This one I want to watch purely because I feel pulled to. It just looks good to me.

The Promised Neverland

“Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their “Mama,” Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage—a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family, never to be heard from again.”

God this anime sounds creepy and amazing I love it!

Forest of Piano

“Young Kai Ichinose lives in the red light district but sneaks away at night to play a piano in the forest. Shuhei Amamiya is the son of a professional pianist who transfers to Kai’s elementary school, where he is bullied by classmates. When Shuhei is dared to play the mysterious piano in the forest he meets Kai, who is seemingly the only person who is capable of getting sound out of the thought-to-be-broken instrument. Kai’s ability earns him the respect of Shuhei and his music teacher — a former master pianist — who try to convince Kai to take piano lessons, which he resists.”

I adore the piano and a beautiful anime with some beautiful music and emotional feeling sounds amazing.

Finishing A First Draft Before the End of the Year

This is my declaration that I will write the first draft of a novel before the end of the year. I have the idea and I have a bit of fun research to do before writing certain elements of the novel, but the bare bones are there.

The best part is that I’m giving myself enough time to write in bite sized pieces and not stress myself out trying to get it done too quickly. All I need is a bit over 300 words everyday and I’ll have a draft done by the end of the year. I’m certain some days I’ll write a good bit more then that and others I’ll give myself a break to do other things, but I have a plan!

The book I will be writing will be a magical realism about a girl with a unique connection to bees. So studying about bee life will be important to the story.

One of these days I think I’m going to sit down and draw this girl in the image I had of her that sparked the idea for this story. I’ve always adored magical realism and to write something so unique and ethereal like this is going to be a blast!

Everyday, at the bottom of my blog post I’ll update how much I wrote towards this novel the previous day and the total word count along with it. It’ll be good to keep track and also to keep accountable over the course of me writing this.

For now I’m excited! I can’t wait to get started on this novel!
